I really can’t wait to fall asleep in front of my fireplace on New Year’s Eve this year. A new record! Y’all remember way back in ‘05 when the SE got hammered by hurricanes?

Might have set a record, but it’s still not as bad as 2005, at least not yet.

Let’s hope it doesn’t get as bad as ‘05.

2004 still sticks out with me as the year Florida got hit by 4 hurricanes. There were a few spots in central FL where THREE separate hurricane eyes passed over in just 6 weeks. Crazy. My grandmother was just ~84 at the time and had to pack up her cats and find a hotel in Orlando to avoid the coast. Took her 7 hours to get there (normally 90 minutes)
Of course, that all got overshadowed by the 2005 devastation of Katrina and Rita (even though I still consider Katrina more of a flood event based on the damage received)

There’s a bit of an asterisk to this: recency bias.
We’ve really only been tracking storms like this to this level of detail since the 90s (perhaps 80s with the GOES system coming online but only a handful of meteorologists had access pre-internet). 30-40 years seems like a long time, but in terms of the various cycles that occur on a planetary scale, that’s really small.

True but it does state that the naming convention goes back to the 50's. Still just a blink in terms of a planetary scale.

Yeah, but we’re talking about storms that are in the middle of the ocean. The criteria for naming in the 50s weren’t met until someone could get a reading from a storm chasing plane or it hit an island. It wasn’t until the 80s that it was even really possible to get barometric pressure or wind speed from space.

Oh it definitely will. With luck though...that won't happen this year.
